Actor Mickey Hargitay Dies at 80

Actor Mickey Hargitay and his daughter, actress Mariska HargitayMickey Hargitay, father of Emmy-winning actress Mariska Hargitay and ex-husband of Hollywood bombshell Jayne Mansfield, has died Thursday, at the age of 80 in Los Angeles. The cause of death was not released.

Mickey Hargitay was born in Hungary in 1926, emigrated to the US after World War II. He became interested in bodybuilding and was named Mr. Universe, Mr. America and Mr. Olympia in 1955. He appeared opposite Mansfield in the film titled “The Loves of Hercules” in 1960, after marrying Mansfield in 1958. The couple had three children during their six-year marriage.

His daughter, the actress Mariska Hergitay (42) won an Emmy award for her performance in the NBC crime drama “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit” last month. Mickey Hargitay also appeared with Mariska on an episode of the crime drama recently.

“Words cannot express how saddened we are by the loss of Mickey. At the same time, we are so grateful for who he was and is to all of us and for the love he gave us in our lives,” the spokesman said. “He will continue to be a source of inspiration and strength.”

California governor Arnold Schwarzenegger who played Hargitay in 1982 TV movie “The Jayne Mansfield Story” also offered his condolences by saying,

“Mickey was such an inspiration and always had such a positive attitude,” the actor-turned-politician said in a statement.

“He was a role model of mine for being a successful immigrant who came to this country and pursued his dreams.”

A private service has been held.
