Microsoft Zune Picture Leaked and More Details

August 18th, 2006

This is the first exclusive picture of Microsoft Zune. It looks almost exactly like the image of Zune posted here before, except a pair of magnetic headphones that are stick together so they’re easier to manage.

You may wonder why this leaked picture is black and white. Well, here is the reason:

The reason the shot is in black and white is because Microsoft assigned a unique color scheme to every Zune prototype in existence right now—all 150 of them—so any leaks could be traced to the employee who leaked it. We don’t want to be jerks and get anybody fired.

Ok, time for more details now. Gizmodo has got more details on the upcoming iPod killer, Microsoft Zune. What we can see so far is that the Zune has a scroll wheel like iPod. But we are wrong! It’s not a scroll wheel actually, but just four buttons arranged in a wheel formation. Maybe Miscrosoft doesn’t want to be accused of copying iPod’s wheel.

Like the wheel, the scrolling speeds up the longer you hold down the button. When you’re scrolling through songs, there’s a large letter that appears in the corner corresponding to the letter of the current song when you’re running through your list. It’s very similar to the way Windows Media Center works when you’re scrolling. In fact, the whole interface is quite like MCE 2005, with the semi-transparent fonts and GUI design.

There’s a grip on its back so you can hold the player when you’re watching video in lanscape mode. Also comes with a kind of magnetic feature on the back for you to attach the headphones. The magnets could be used for some sort of docking or case design—they’re still working on that. The dock connector is located on its bottom as what we find on iPod. The case is plastic and semi-transparent.

The UI itself has white text on colored backgrounds, with lots of textures and could even be skinnable. It displays album art or Windows Media Player-like visualization when the song is playing. It also has both FM tuner and FM transmitter that can feed up Song and Artist information.

Two menu options that were disabled were the WiFi, and Capture Settings so Gizmodo team are not sure what the Capture Settings is and guess it’s for recording FM.
